Bedale AFC 5 v Whitby Fishermen FC 1 - 21/10/17 - ground #453 - The Heck Stadium
arrived at thornaby station earlier than planned, so decided to do northallerton via darlo, which turned out to be a good move! after the 11.00 to darlo, I did the 11.40 to northallertomn, which was TPE 185140, winner!! (only 102 & 119 required now!) . after a walk upto the top of the high street to tick off sainsburys for a spot of shopping, I caught the Dales & District local bus 73 to Bedale.
after a very nice portion of chips & curry sauce (chippy had no buns left for a butty) I made the short walk upto the ground in time for kick off & complete the North Riding Football League :)
last year I arrived at the venue only to be told that the football was called off due to away team unable to make up the numbers (as was the cricket match!!) , thankfully this wasn't a wasted trip. the home team raced into an early 2-0 lead, then down came the rain, a 3rd was added just before HT thanks to a well taken free kick. Whitby played well in the 2nd half & got a well deserved goal not long after a free kick of theirs was tipped onto the bar by the home keeper. 3-1. whitby were reduced to 10 men, possibly coz he called the ref shite! Bedale added 2 goals towards the end, but in truth it was a crackin game, both teams went for it & looked like they enjoyed it!
after the game, cold & soaked, I made my way back into town for the 73 back to northallerton station, easily catching the 16.40 back to thornaby :)
season 2017/18 = 12 new grounds , 78 goals

Whitby Fishermen 2 v Hunmanby United 3 - 10/09/16 - ground #419 - Mulgrave Community Sports Association
started the day off on the 9.20 thornaby - boro, which gave me plenty time to get booze & crisps in at sainsburys, then a double sausage muffin (without the egg) at Mcds, back to the station for the 10.28 to Whitby. enjoyed 2 winner bottles of cider on the journey down. arrived at Whitby just after 12, did the short walk up the bank to the cricket club, watched some cricket then caught the 4 along the coast to lythe, where the ground is. the match was a cracker!
the home team led 1-0 at HT, they were reduced to 10 men in the 2nd half, hunmanby then equalized. shortly after they were down to 9, then hunmanby took the lead before being reduced to 10 men ! hunmanby then went 3-1 up. Whitby kept on goin and pulled 1 back in the last minute. more drama was to come when Whitby got a penalty in stoppage time, which unfortunately almost landed in the sea! walked back through the village for the 4 back into town. it arrived 10 mins late, then pulled up with its water alarm blasting. the little fire station was closed down, so the driver had to ask the pax if anyone had bottles of water! he managed to get 2 which was enough to get the bus to town. I'd hoped to have a quick pint in spoons before the 16.00 back to boro, but with the bus farce, I only had 15 mins to spare, so just got on the train early & cracked open a can which was nearly finished on departure. the train after the 16.00 is 19.19, but that's a DRY train, so that's a no no!! arrived back at boro at 5.30, short wait for the 17.38 to thornaby to finish a brilliant day out :)
my next trip to Whitby will be to watch Sleights, who play at Caedman College.
